Highway stormwater runoff is toxic

The major contaminants of interest are deicers; nutrients; heavy metals (from wear on brakes and steel-belted radials); petroleum-related organic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), and methyl tert -butyl ether (MTBE); sediment washed off the road surface; and agricultural chemicals used in highway maintenance.
